What the check shows
| Check | Where it comes from | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Company status | Companies House register | Anything other than "Active", such as "Active - Proposal to Strike off", "Liquidation" or "In Administration" |
| Accounts due date | Register | A due date in the past means the accounts are overdue |
| Accounts type | Register | Dormant or micro-entity accounts reveal little about trading |
| Incorporation date | Register | Very new companies have no accounts history yet |
| Registered office and SIC codes | Register | A formation agent address or an activity that does not match what the company told you |
| Net assets, cash, creditors | Latest iXBRL accounts | Negative net assets, cash falling year on year, creditors rising faster than assets |
| Employees | Latest accounts | Headcount that does not fit the size of the contract |
What it does not show
A company check is a first filter, not a credit rating. It does not show County Court Judgments, payment behaviour, director history or the filed PDF documents. For those, see how to check a UK company, which walks through the full process including the free Companies House service and the CCJ register.
Figures are taken from accounts the company filed, so they can be up to 21 months old for a company that files on the last day. Large groups often file PDF-only accounts, which our free figures do not cover.
Checking more than a few companies?
- History: a financial history pack gives every set of accounts since 2008 for one company in Excel, for £9.
- Lists and alerts: the API and MCP server lets you check a whole supplier list and set a watchlist that flags overdue accounts, status changes and falling net assets.
How common are warning signs?
On 1 October 2026, 1.8% of active UK companies had overdue accounts and 423,006 companies carried a proposal to strike off. See UK companies with overdue accounts.
FAQ
How do I check if a UK company is legitimate?
Confirm it exists on the Companies House register under the exact name and number it gives you, that its status is active, that its accounts and confirmation statement are not overdue, and that its registered office and directors match what you were told.
Is a company check free?
Yes. The register details and the latest balance sheet figures are free on our site and on the Companies House service. Paid services add credit scores, CCJs and payment data.
Can I see a company's turnover?
Only if it filed a profit and loss account. Most small and micro companies do not publish one, so turnover is often not public. See how to find a company's turnover.
